5.1. Methodological overview

The methodology followed in this course is oriented towards achievement of the learning objectives. It is based on participation and the active role of the student that favors the development of communication and decision-making skills. A wide range of teaching and learning tasks are implemented, such as

  • Lectures where the teacher introduces knowledge about urban regeneration forms, traditions, works and instruments
  • Guided assignments, where students develop a coordinated project between the courses Urbanization Projects and Urban Management. The exercises developed during the semester enable a continuous assessment.

Further information regarding the course will be provided on the first day of class.

5.2. Learning tasks

The course includes 6 ECTS organized according to:

  • Lectures. 1 hour/week.
  • Guided assignments. 3 hours/week.
  • Visits. At the beginning of the course, on a date to be determined according to the academic calendar, students will visit the neighbourhood to carry out the guided assignments. In addition, there will be a voluntary trip to visit performances and urban references related to such guided assignments.
  • Autonomous work
  • Tutorials
  • Complementary activities supervised by the teachers that will allow the students, who have passed the course, to improve their final grade.

5.3. Syllabus

The course will address the following topics:

  1. Introduction. On modern and contemporary urban planning traditions
  2. On compact and diverse cities. What are the optimum densities?
  3. On cities and urban landscapes. How are good urban forms?
  4. On urban structures and hierarchies. Could the city work like a tree?
  5. On public spaces and urban regeneration. How to project the spaces in between?
  6. On urbanism and equity How does urbanism affect social cohesion?
  7. On peripheries and metropolitan landscapes. Towards a city between cities?
  8. On urban policies and strategies Are there urban models in the 21st century?
  9. Urban planning and urban regeneration. Innovative European Experiences.
  10. Urban planning and urban regeneration. Spanish Experiences.
  11. Urban planning and urban regeneration in Zaragoza.
